How betting odds work: decimal prices, probability and margin

Betting odds are a price. In decimal format your stake times the odds is the full payout, so ₦1,000 at 2.50 returns ₦2,500 including the stake. Divide 100 by the odds to get the implied probability, 40% here. Add those percentages across every outcome and the total passes 100%: the surplus is the bookmaker's margin.

How to read decimal odds

Decimal betting odds show the total return for every ₦1 staked, stake included. Multiply the stake by the price for the payout if the selection comes in, then take away the stake for the net return. If it loses, nothing comes back.

Worked example with a made-up price

Stake and odds₦2,000 at 1.85
Payout if it comes in₦3,700
Net return₦1,700

Below 2.00 the net return is smaller than the stake, because the outcome is priced as more likely than not. Exactly 2.00, called evens, doubles the stake. A price of 1.01 pays ₦10 net per ₦1,000, so one upset wipes out a hundred of those returns.

Turning odds into implied probability

Implied probability: the chance inside the price

Divide 100 by the decimal odds and you get the implied probability: the chance the price suggests, with the bookmaker's margin still inside. Then compare it with how likely the outcome looks to you. If you rate a team at 40% and the price implies 50%, the odds are too short for your own view.

  • 1.25 implies 80%, a strong favourite.
  • 2.00 implies 50%, a coin-flip price.
  • 3.40 implies 29.4%, roughly 3 times in 10.
  • 8.00 implies 12.5%, and with the margin removed the chance is lower still.

High odds are not better odds: they are a bigger payout for a smaller chance. A better price is a higher payout for the same outcome. ₦1,000 at 2.10 pays ₦2,100 and at 2.00 pays ₦2,000, and that ₦100 gap is what "best odds" means. Nigerian bettors notice it: in a July 2017 NOI Polls survey, 24% chose a platform for its odds, just behind timely payment at 26%.

Converting decimal, fractional and American odds

Fractional odds such as 6/4 are the traditional British style, and American moneyline odds such as +150 are the US style. All three formats describe the same price.

Payout includes the stake. Implied probability rounded to one decimal place.

DecimalFractionalAmericanImplied probabilityPayout on ₦1,000

Gambling odds calculator: four formulas

  1. Work out the payoutPayout = stake × odds; net return = stake × (odds - 1). ₦500 at 3.20 pays ₦1,600, or ₦1,100 net.
  2. Convert fractional odds to decimalDivide top by bottom and add 1, so 6/4 becomes 2.50.
  3. Convert American odds to decimalPlus price: divide by 100 and add 1, so +250 is 3.50. Minus price: divide 100 by it and add 1, so -150 is 1.67.
  4. Turn decimal odds into a probabilityDivide 100 by the odds: 1.67 gives 59.9%.

The bookmaker's margin inside a 1X2 market

Add the implied probabilities of every outcome and the total passes 100%. The surplus is the margin, also called overround or vig, and it is how a bookmaker gets paid. A fair coin at 2.00 each way sums to 100%; at 1.90 each way it sums to 105.3%.

Example 1X2 football market with made-up prices, not taken from any bookmaker

OutcomeOddsImplied probabilityFair odds without margin
1 (home)2.1047.6%2.22
X (draw)3.3030.3%3.49
2 (away)3.6027.8%3.81
Market total105.7%100%

This market totals 105.7%. Stake on all three outcomes so each pays the same, and ₦100 in stakes returns ₦94.61 whatever the score: the ₦5.39 gap is the built-in edge. To strip the margin from one price, multiply it by the market total as a decimal, so 2.10 × 1.057 gives a fair 2.22. Reading betting odds this way shows what a single pick costs you.

Accumulator odds multiply, and so does the margin

On an accumulator, called an Express on 1win.ng, the leg odds are multiplied and every leg must come in. Legs at 1.50, 1.80 and 2.00 give 5.40, so ₦1,000 returns ₦5,400. The implied chance multiplies too, down to 18.5%, and if one leg cuts, the slip is lost.

Margins stack the same way. With a 5% overround on each leg, two legs return 90.7% of stakes in theory, three legs 86.4% and five legs 78.4%. If a leg uses a handicap or double chance market, the betting terms guide explains how those markets read.

1win.ng rules add an express bonus, a percentage on top of the net return when an Express of 5 or more events comes in: 7% at 5 events, one point more per event up to 12% at 10, and 15% at 11 or more.

Example: five events at total odds of 8.00 and a ₦1,000 stake return ₦8,000, a net ₦7,000. The 7% bonus adds ₦490, as if the odds were 8.49. It lifts the payout, not the chance of the slip coming in. The accumulator and express bonus guide covers building the slip.

Why do sports betting odds move?

A price is the bookmaker's current estimate plus margin, so it moves when the estimate does. Team news, injuries and heavy money on one side shift pre-match prices. In play, a goal or a red card reprices the market, so odds in live betting can change between opening the slip and confirming it.

A moved price means a moved probability: a team drifting from 2.00 to 2.50 has gone from 50% to 40% in the market's view. 1win.ng rules also let the company limit the maximum bet and the odds on any event, and the site footer links the full Rules on Sports document.

Betting odds today: where to look on 1win.ng

No guide can print odds for today reliably, because prices keep moving up to kick-off and during play. The 1win.ng betting menu has Live, Prematch, Top Bets, Cybersport for esports and Bets History. Football covers the Champions League, LaLiga, Bundesliga and Serie A, and 1win.ng has listed World Cup 2026 qualifiers with Nigeria matches. The football betting guide and the sportsbook overview go through those markets and other sports.

  2. Convert the price before adding itDivide 100 by the odds for the chance, and multiply stake by odds for the payout in naira.

What 5% withholding tax does to your odds

1win.ng rules set withholding tax at 5% of the net amount for residents of Nigeria and 15% for non-residents, the same rates as the Withholding Tax Regulations 2024.

₦1,000 single at 2.50, with 5% withheld from the net amount

Payout before tax₦2,500
Tax on ₦1,500 net₦75
You keep₦2,425
Effective odds2.425

Longer odds lose more to the tax: at 5%, 2.50 works like 2.425 and 11.00 like 10.50. At the 15% rate, the same ₦1,000 bet at 2.50 keeps ₦2,275.

Casino payout odds and the house edge

Casino tables quote odds as ratios. A payout of 35 to 1 is ₦35 net per ₦1, or 36.00 in decimal. A single-zero roulette wheel has 37 pockets, so the true odds against one number are 36 to 1, and that gap is the 2.70% house edge. The Lagos Casino and Gaming Regulations 2021 set 35 to 1 as the maximum roulette odds; the roulette guide covers the wheels on 1win.ng.

Other games publish the same idea as house edge or RTP. With 8 decks the baccarat Banker bet carries a 1.06% edge and the Tie bet 14.36%. In Aviator the cash-out multiplier works like decimal odds you choose yourself: payout is bet × multiplier. More in which casino games give the best odds.

A price checklist before you stake

  • Turn the odds into a percentage and ask whether that chance looks right.
  • Multiply stake by odds for the naira payout, then take 5% off the net if you are a Nigerian resident.
  • Compare prices for the same outcome instead of chasing the biggest number.
  • On an Express, multiply the implied chances as well as the odds before you add another leg.
  • Stake only what you can afford to lose: 3.00 implies the stake is gone two times in three, and limits and self-exclusion are there if betting starts costing more than you planned.
