Handicap meaning in betting, explained with naira examples

The handicap meaning in betting comes down to one adjustment: goals are added to one team's score or taken away, and your bet is settled on that adjusted score. A team at -1.5 must finish two goals clear, while its opponent at +1.5 still pays out after a one-goal defeat. 1X2, double chance and DNB use the real score.

What is a handicap in betting?

A handicap is a goal start or deficit the bookmaker gives one side to balance an uneven fixture. That is the handicap meaning in betting: the favourite carries a minus line and must do more than beat the other side, while the underdog carries a plus line and can lose yet still pay out.

Example: the match ends Home 2-1 Away. Whole-goal lines are Asian (two-way).

Your betAdjusted scoreResult
Home -0.51.5 v 1Pays out
Home -11 v 1Stake returned
Home -1.50.5 v 1Loses
Away +0.52 v 1.5Loses
Away +12 v 2Stake returned
Away +1.52 v 2.5Pays out

The handicap meaning in betting stays the same in other sports, and only the unit changes: points in basketball, games or sets in tennis. For football fixtures, the football betting guide covers the competitions listed on 1win.ng.

Working through handicap bets on paper

How to read a handicap line before you stake

Four checks turn a line on the match page into a list of scores that pay. The first bet guide covers the betslip itself.

  1. Open the match under Prematch or LivePick the fixture on 1win.ng. The match page lists the markets offered for that event.
  2. Find the team with the minus signA minus line gives goals away and a plus line receives them, so Home -1 mirrors Away +1.
  3. Count the selections in the marketTwo selections mean an Asian handicap, where whole-goal lines can refund. Three, including a handicap draw, mean a European handicap.
  4. Apply the line to the score you expectHome -1 with a 2-1 result gives 1-1: a refund on an Asian line, a Draw (-1) result on a European one.

Asian handicap: half, whole and quarter lines

An Asian handicap has two outcomes, so the draw drops out. On a half-goal line there is always a result. When a whole-goal line leaves the adjusted score level, your stake comes back. Quarter lines split the stake into two equal bets on the neighbouring lines.

A quarter line in naira: ₦2,000 on Home -0.75 at odds of 1.90 puts ₦1,000 on -0.5 and ₦1,000 on -1. A 2-0 home result pays both halves, ₦3,800 back. At 1-0 the -0.5 half pays ₦1,900 and the -1 half returns ₦1,000, so ₦2,900 in total. A draw or an away victory loses both halves.

European handicap and the handicap draw

A European handicap keeps three outcomes, so a level adjusted score is its own selection, not a refund. On Home -1 you choose Home (-1), Draw (-1) or Away (+1). The same line may be written 0:1: the second-named team starts one goal up.

European handicap, Home -1. An Asian Home -1 would refund the 2-1 score instead.

What is 1X2 in betting?

1X2 betting is the three-way match result. "1" is the team listed first (the home side, unless the venue is neutral), "X" is the draw and "2" is the team listed second. For cup ties, the Rules on Sports document in the 1win.ng footer sets whether extra time and penalties count, so read it before a knockout.

Example: ₦1,000 on X at odds of 3.30. A level score returns ₦3,300, stake included; any other result loses the ₦1,000. The guide to decimal odds shows how a price turns into a payout and an implied chance.

Betting on the draw

A draw is one narrow result, so a single late goal ends the bet. In play, the X price shortens while the score stays level and lengthens once a goal breaks the deadlock. For a tight game with no clear favourite, compare X with 1X and X2 first. The live betting guide explains in-play markets on 1win.ng.

Double chance meaning in betting: 1X, X2 and 12

Double chance covers two of the three 1X2 results with one bet, at shorter odds than either single result.

  • 1X: the first team beats the second or the match ends level. Only an away victory loses.
  • X2: the second team comes out ahead or the match ends level. That is the X2 meaning in betting: away or draw.
  • 12: either team finishes ahead. The bet loses only on a level score.

Double chance has an exact twin in the Asian market: 1X settles like the first team at +0.5, and X2 like the second team at +0.5. When a match page lists both, compare the prices: the scores covered are identical.

DNB meaning in betting: draw no bet

DNB stands for draw no bet. You pick a team: if it beats the other side you are paid, a draw returns your stake, and a defeat loses it. DNB is Asian handicap 0 under another name.

Say you put ₦1,000 on Home DNB at odds of 1.60. A 2-0 home result returns ₦1,600, 1-1 returns ₦1,000 and 0-1 returns nothing. The DNB price sits between the team's plain 1X2 price and its double chance price, because a refund is worth less than a payout.

Refunds matter in accumulators. 1win.ng rules add a percentage to the net amount above your stake when an express of 5 or more events comes in: 7% at five events, rising to 15% at eleven or more. Check how the Rules on Sports count a refunded leg before you build one. The express bonus guide has the full scale.

Betting rollover: bonus wagering or rolling a stake

On bonus pages, rollover means the wagering requirement: what you must stake before bonus money moves to your main balance. 1win.ng rules apply it only to money bonuses and only to the bonus amount. Sports bonuses are wagered on sports bets and casino bonuses in the Bonus Wagering category; the exact requirement is listed in Promotions & Bonuses on 1win.ng. The wagering guide covers the casino side, and the welcome package page shows how 500% and 500 free spins spread over four deposits.

Outside bonus terms, rollover betting means staking the full return of one bet on the next selection. It works like an accumulator placed one leg at a time: a single miss takes the original stake with it.

Handicapper, arbitrage and value betting defined

What is a handicapper in betting?

A handicapper rates matches and the lines attached to them. At a bookmaker, traders set handicaps so both sides of a fixture draw bets; in horse racing, the handicapper assigns weights to even out a field. Online, the word also covers tipsters selling picks, and no tipster controls a match result.

Arbitrage in sports betting

Arbitrage means backing every outcome of one event with different bookmakers when the combined prices leave a gap on paper. Test it by adding 1 divided by each decimal price: two tennis prices of 2.10 give 0.952, below 1. In practice a price can move before every leg is placed, a leg can be voided, and 1win.ng rules let the company limit the maximum bet and odds on any event.

Value betting on sports

Value betting means taking a price longer than your own estimate: if you rate a draw at one in three (33.3%), odds of 3.40 imply 29.4%. The weak point is the estimate itself, and the bookmaker's margin sits in every market. Set a stake limit before any of this; the responsible play page covers limits and self-exclusion.

One match, eight bets: which scores pay

This table puts the handicap meaning in betting next to 1X2, double chance and DNB on one fixture, using Asian lines. The more scores a bet covers, the shorter its price, and no market removes the chance of losing the stake.

Questions players ask

What is 1X2 in betting?
1X2 is the three-way match result: 1 is the team listed first, X the draw and 2 the team listed second. Only one of the three settles as correct, and Rules on Sports in the 1win.ng footer sets which period counts in cup ties.
What does -1.5 mean in betting?
The team must beat the other side by two goals or more. A one-goal victory, a draw or a defeat loses the bet.
What does a +1 handicap mean in football?
On an Asian line the team starts one goal up: a draw or better pays out, and a one-goal defeat returns your stake. On a European line that one-goal defeat pays the Draw selection instead.
Is double chance the same as draw no bet?
No. Double chance 1X pays out on a draw at a shorter price, while draw no bet only hands your stake back on a draw, at a longer price.
What does X2 mean in betting?
X2 is the double chance selection on the away team or the draw. It loses only when the home team finishes ahead.
Do handicap bets include extra time?
That depends on the market. The Rules on Sports document in the 1win.ng footer sets which period each football market covers, so check it and the market name before a cup knockout.
